The heART of the Community

Art is the soul of a community, connecting people, history, and culture in meaningful ways. In Wayne America, art has long been a cornerstone of our community’s identity, enriching the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. From public sculptures that celebrate local heritage to colorful murals that brighten downtown, art is woven into the fabric of Wayne. The city’s dedication to the arts dates back to the creation of the Wayne State College Studio Arts program in the early 1900s, which has since produced countless talented artists who’ve left their mark on the region. Local projects like the Wayne Sculpture Walk and public art installations in our parks continue this tradition, fostering creativity and bringing people together. Whether it’s through music, painting, or outdoor displays, art helps build a vibrant community where everyone can find inspiration and connection.

Centennial

Wayne Centennial Mural

Artist: Carlos Frey

The Wayne Centennial Mural was completed to commemorate Wayne's Centennial in 1984. The mural was painted by local artist Carlos Frey as a gift to Dr. Donald & Mrs. Claudia Koeber, longtime Wayne residents and owners of the building until 2018. The building is now the home of Wayne EyeCare, owned and operated by Dr. Ben Uhl.

Illuminated City

Artist: Dave Loewenstein

Painted on the north side of the historic Majestic Theatre, this mural adapts drive-in movie marquees to celebrate important aspects of the Wayne community. From the beloved Chicken Show to Wayne State’s Willow Bowl and the downtown staple Aqua Pop, community, culture, art, nature, history and pride each have their own lushly illuminated marquee. The mural was created in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, which meant that community meetings to develop the mural’s themes had to be held on Zoom, while painting, usually with many volunteers, was done by myself.
